A netminder who overcame mental health struggles is honored for his perseverance.

On Wednesday, the National Hockey League announced that Arizona Coyotes goaltender Connor Ingram has been awarded the 2024 Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy.

The 27-year-old netminder had a respectable season with the Coyotes, but his path to get to this point has been more inspiring than his numbers.

Ingram nearly called it a career early, citing lingering depression and undiagnosed obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). However, he ended up getting help through the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance Program in 2021, which Ingram says was the big turning point in his life, and his career.

The Saskatoon native arrived in Tempe after being claimed off waivers, and slowly worked his way to being the No. 1 goaltender for the Coyotes. This past season, Ingram went 23-21-3 in 50 appearances, posting a 2.91 goals-against average and a .907 save percentage. He also posted six shutouts, tied for most in the league.

Ingram has been in the pro ranks since 2017, but was playing just his second full season in the NHL. In 80 career games, he is 30-36-11 with a 3.10 GAA and a .906 SV% with seven shutouts.

Ingram is the first player from the Winnipeg Jets/Coyotes franchise ever to win the Bill Masterton.

The Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy is awarded to the player “who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to hockey.” It was dedicated to Bill Masteron, the former Minnesota North Stars player who died on Jan. 15, 1968, after sustaining an injury during a game.
