Bobby Dalbec has one last chance to prove himself for the Red Sox

Boston Red Sox infielder Bobby Dalbec has been unable to establish himself at the major league level. He may have one last chance to do so.

The Red Sox placed first baseman Triston Casas on the injured list on Sunday with what had been called a left rib strain. Casas underwent an MRI to determine the extent of the injury, with Julian McWilliams of The Boston Globe reporting that images determined Casas would miss a significant amount of time.

Casas' injury means that an opportunity is available for someone to seize the position in the interim. Dalbec shifted over from third base when Casas was removed from Saturday's game while Pablo Reyes manned the position on Sunday. As Rafael Devers is expected to return to the lineup soon, first base is Dalbec's best chance at playing time.

It may also be his last chance. Dalbec was the Red Sox's top prospect ahead of the 2021 season, with MLB.com ranking him as the 92nd best prospect in baseball. He was compared to Kris Bryant, his raw power coming from impressive bat speed and strength. His impressive arm strength and agility ensured that he would remain at third, potentially turning into a star for the Red Sox.

Dalbec was unable to live up to that billing. He showed his power during his rookie season in 2021, hitting 25 homers, but otherwise disappointed with a .240/.298/.494 batting line in his 453 plate appearances, drawing just 28 walks while striking out 156 times.

Dalbec had one more full season in 2022, but had been passed on the depth chart by Casas and Devers. He has since shuffled back and forth to Triple-A, waiting for another opportunity.

This may be the last chance for Dalbec in Boston. He will turn 29 years old at the end of June. If he is going to force his way into the lineup, even as a utility option, he will need to prove that he can be a productive player. Casas' injury has opened the door; it is up to Dalbec to take advantage.
